As I’ve been talking about in my email newsletter, I have three writing retreats on my calendar this fall: one each in September, October, and November. I got the first one on the books last week. While I’ll get into the details in Tuesday’s edition of Letters (sign up here if you want in), I thought I’d share a few photos here. No wild storms this time! Although I just missed a big nor’easter this past weekend. Fingers crossed for sweet weather when I return in October.
Not for the first time, I encountered a lost boat during my off-season meandering. If I hadn’t been recovering from a respiratory illness, and if I hadn’t had the audience of everyone sitting outside the Elks Lodge, I would’ve been tempted to drag this little guy around to the boat ramp and find a way to haul it home.

My friend Oli and I refer to this kind of thing as a “bachelor mode” dinner: single-serve, single-pan, low-effort, ideally high-comfort. Here I used a frozen Beyond Burger as a ground meat portion for one, browned it in a pan with some green beans from my garden, and tossed in a few hunks of medium cheddar at the end. I’d originally planned to make rice with it but opted for a piece of bread (also dug out of the freezer) to save dishes. Pairs great with beer in case anyone’s wondering.
The moon offered a rewarding view out the kitchen door after chowing down on a bachelor-mode dinner.
As you will read in my newsletter tomorrow, this trip wasn’t all fun and finders-keepers boats. I stayed on task well for the most part, but I afforded myself a little break to organize the towel closet. People who share this space with me are going to think I’m a nut with the number of things I recreationally labeled in the house. Let them. Until they’ve finished their second book, I’m unconcerned about their opinions of my process.
